Robyn’s Favorite Brush Set

Roby McClendon recently published a book named Gel Plate Printing for Mixed-Media Art. The book was first published by Schiffer Craft in 2023. The books ISBN number is 978-0-7643-6694-9.

The book created quite a stir. Among the many questions Robyn is asked is about the many brushes used in that book.

From the conversation we made a collection of brushes that Robyn recommends.

Medium Diameter Orange Synthetic with a 1” long bristle and Wangi handle (link here)

My Orange Synthetic brushes are popular with those who like stiff-er brushes. The Orange Synthetic bristle is made from a specialized grade of synthetic fibers that are etched and tapered. This helps the brush provide smooth delivery of all types of painting media. It is ideal for viscous and heavily loaded media, and for anyone who likes a stiff-er but not too stiff brush. It is also outstanding for dry brush and stippling. The Orange Synthetic brushes offer excellent performance in all sizes and give fabulous snap and feedback The brush has a pointed tip.

The bristle length is about 1″. This is good for tightly controlled work and general applications. I offer these brushes with other bristle lengths.

My Goat and Synthetic blended brushes are made from the highest grade of double dressed Goat hair, and the brushes also include just the right amount of a very high quality grade of tapered synthetic fibers blended in. The Goat and Synthetic blend brush is my most popular and is a revolutionary brush! It is a unique brush that offers the ability to produce a hair fine line, provides subtle and excellent feedback, even when working on the tip, and holds a lot of paint or ink.

Small Diameter Russian Sable with ½” long bristle and bamboo cane (link here)

My Russian Sable brushes are made from the tail hair of select Russian Sable. This is one of the most prized types of brushes available anywhere. Russian Sable hair is about 1/2th the diameter of human hair and tapers at the tip from there. As a result Russian Sable brushes have an ultra-fine point and great media holding capability. It is among the best around for watercolor, ink, and aqueous acrylics. Some use Russian sable with solvent based paints and inks. As a note solvents accelerate the wear of natural hair brushes.

The Russian Sable brush set is unmatched for all types of work but of course it excels at detailed strokes. There are few finer brushes on the planet than the Russian Sable.

The brush set includes a small and medium Wangi handles.

• The Small-size diameter bristle is about 2mm to 4mm
• The Wangi Medium-size diameter bristle is about 7mm

The bamboo cane handle is light in the hand and very comfortable. This handle is hand carved and oiled.

The Wangi handle is a special offering that has a 7mm bristle diameter combined with a rare, very light imported bamboo root known as Wangi bamboo. This handle is hand carved and oiled. It is very soft to the touch and light in the hand. You can spend all day using it. The mid-size bristle lets you spend more time applying paint.

These brushes are workhorses and will provide many years of enjoyment.

• My brushes are handmade, and so there are no two which are completely identical. When you order, the handle color may be dark brown, yellow, or something in between.
• If you have a specific request, let me know on a note when you get to the checkout. My brushes are all one of kind creations. The handle color and length will vary with the bamboo I use at the time. I’ll match the brush up to your request as close as I can. Note that unless you provide a note, I will not accept returns due to issues related to the handle color or length.
• I keep a good supply of brushes on hand. I sell up to hundreds of brushes at a show and due to this I run out of some brush types from time to time. If I don’t have one in stock at the time of your order I will let you know.
• If I’m at a show, delivery of your order may be delayed by about a week. I will let you know if that’s the case. I check orders almost every day.
